Samsung Washer Error Code SUD

Too many suds (foam) were detected in the tub.

Also shown as: 5UD, SUd, Sd, 5d, SUdS Last verified: 2026-10-30

Safety first. Unplug the washer before opening any panel, touching wiring, or removing a pump filter cover. Turn the water taps off before disconnecting a hose. If water is leaking, turn the taps off first and do not keep running the machine. This page is general information, not professional repair advice.

Most likely causes, in order

CauseHow common
Too much detergent for the load sizeMost common
Non-HE detergent in a high-efficiency washerCommon
Detergent residue built up in the drum and dispenser over many washesCommon

What to try, easiest first

  1. Do nothing for a few minutes — the washer pauses on purpose to let foam settle, then usually resumes on its own.
  2. If it stays paused, run a Rinse + Spin cycle with no detergent at all.
  3. For the next wash, use the smaller dose marked for your load size and confirm the detergent says HE (high efficiency).
  4. If foam returns on every wash even with a small HE dose, run a drum-clean / Self Clean cycle to clear residue.

Reset procedure

Soft reset (first try): press Power to switch the washer off, wait about 2–3 minutes, switch it back on and restart the cycle. If the code was a one-off sensor glitch, it often clears here.

Hard reset: switch the washer off, unplug it from the wall outlet (or switch its breaker off) for 2–3 minutes, plug it back in and restart. Never open a panel or touch wiring while it is plugged in.

When to call a technician

Call a technician only if foam keeps returning after the detergent and drum-clean steps, or water leaks from the dispenser during foaming.

Difficulty, time and cost

DifficultyEasy
Typical DIY time5–15 minutes plus waiting time (editorial estimate, not a quoted time)
Part / job cost$0 — no part is involved. No part cost applies; the fix is detergent dose and a rinse or drum-clean cycle. Prices vary by model and area — treat every figure as an estimate, not a quote.

Model notes and limits

Displays render this fault several ways — SUD, 5UD, SUd, Sd — because of how the small display shapes letters. All of them mean excess foam, not a broken part.

Front-load and top-load models, AddWash/FlexWash models, and US versus UK displays can show the same fault differently. Always confirm against the manual for your exact model number (on the label inside the door or lid, or on the back of the washer) before ordering a part.

Frequently asked questions

Is this code actually an error?

No. It is a warning that foam is too high. The washer pauses, lets foam settle, and usually finishes the cycle by itself.

I used the capful the bottle suggested. Why too much foam?

Bottle doses assume a full, heavily soiled load and soft water. A small load or soft water needs much less — start at half the marked dose.

Can too much foam damage the washer?

Occasionally, no. Repeatedly, yes — foam can push water past seals and confuse the level sensor, so fix the dose rather than ignoring it.
